There are many serious contenders for the throne, but Zep rules above all others. Their musicianship and their visionary compositions are on a level beyond all other bands. Is Page the best guitarist on a technical level? No, but he's the most exciting and imaginative. Sure, in their early days they sometimes stole material (Dazed & Confused from Jake Holmes, White Summer from Davy Graham, Whole Lotta Love from the Small Faces' version of You Need Lovin', etc.), but even still they were the best, hands down. I was in high school when Kiss got big, and me and my other musician pals all considered Kiss to be kiddie-rock. Bands of today such as AFI, Fallout Boy, etc don't even hold a candle to Kiss.

I've seen virtually all of the greats of rock including Led Zeppelin in their prime (1972). As great as many of these bands have been, nobody, and I mean nobody, has remotely approached what Led Zeppelin could do in their lean and hungry days. I rate LZ the highest for a number of reasons.(1) The legend. If a poll was taken of the greatest rocker of the past 20 years, you would probably get universal agreement of their influence.(2)Earlier in this thread, Stanislave made a weak argument of how LZ stole all their material.That is absurd. Please get from your library,The Beatles Recording Sessions by Mark Lewisohn. It's an excellent very thorough detailed music diary of their amazing just 8 year recording career!

Many of their recording engineers and tape operators are interviewed in this book,and some of them were innovative as well. They describe just how truly innovative,creative and prolific The Beatles really were in the recording studio especially John Lennon and Paul McCartney.A 15 year old guy said he read it and he's loved The Beatles ever since!

I have always totally *hated* Led Zeppelin from the time I was a teenager. They truly sound like one of the worst bands or any "music" I have had the misfortune of ever hearing! They along with Queen,and Pink Floyd are the only 3 bands that I have to get up off of my chair even if I'm very tired and turn off immediately! Cant compare LZ and the beatles - both are great but are just so different. LZ for SURE had more skill, talent, experience or whatever you wanna call it, far more pssionate (LOL i have to misspell the previous word pssionate because if i spell it correctly it accuses me of using inappropriate language (donkey, butt)), but played in a different time and had slightly different influences. It really depends on what you like. I think that LZ songs are far more meaningful, while the beatles songs are catchy and innovative but have uncreative and plain lyrics. I love the beatles too, but I prefer LZ's epic riffs and melodies over the Beatles's lyric based music.

That is a subjective opinion who is greater. Though if Led Zeppelin were doing Revolver or Sgt Peppers would the albums have been influential if Zeppelin did it. I highly doubt it. Yeh, they built on other sources for many of their early songs but, for instance, is Zep's Dazed and Confused anything like the original? How many bands have a range of ORIGINAL songs such as Stairway, Kashmir, Achilles, Ramble On, That's the Way, Going to Cali, Trampled Under Foot? Not many. And the musicianship? Very hard to equal. Its pretty easy to sing most Who or Beatles or Pink Floyd songs, but try doing what Plant does with his voice on the avg Zep song. Their guitarist was pretty good too:)

I dont like rock...i like sad songs like Black dogs. I cried so much during this song...everytime he would say "oh yeah oh yeah oh oh oh yeah" it made me sadder by every "oh". It kept me depressed for weeks. The band has a GREAT talent for making people sad. I think the funniest rock song ever is dont you cry by "Guns and Roses". I started cracking up everytime they said "And don't you cry tonight Don't you cry tonight Don't you cry tonight There's a heaven above you baby And don't you cry tonight" (AND THEY SAID THAT ALOT. Rock And Roll is too unintelligent to be true Led Zep. Misty Mountain Hop is good. The Battle Of Vermore has excellent vocals. Stairway To Heaven couldnt be more overrated. Four STicks is pretty good, I guess. GOing to california is too slow. When The Levee Breaks is a musical masterpiece, and certainly one of the best Led Zep songs ever. Led Zep 2 is the only bad Led Zep album ever made.

Worldwide the difference between Led Zep's and Queen's total sales is very small. Led Zep are more popular in USA(I don't know why) but outside USA Queen are more popular(this is fact). It's debatable if Helter Skelter is the first metal song but it was a influence. Tomorrow Never Knows is ahead of its time it's almost techno. The Beatles basically reinvented rock music with the later stuff. Led Zeppelin in the end to me is the best band, but influence I would give to the Beatles.

Man is Led Zeppelin overrated they sold many albums but they never had a number one song and they released many singles. The drummer is good but Robert Plant is a screamer and Jimmi Page tried his best but he is sloppy at best. The Beatles destroy Led Zeppelin in the amount of cover versions and the amount of bands that site the Beatles as an influence. The only subgenre that Led Zeppelin influence is hard rock and many of Led Zeppelin songs are variations or obvious copies of blues standards example Whole Lotta Love.

Although my second choice is Deep Purple, of course, they are not in same situation.

Plus they had 3 songwriters in lennon mccartney and harrison each with their own style unlike lz!! harrison was an under rated guitarist and mccartney is a amazing bass player! sure lennon wasn't the best musician but he made up with it with his lyrics and his knowledge of music! for every good lz song i cud name 20 beatle songs which are better. As usual, I hear people saying the Beatles were better, and sure they were an amazing band, but overall Led Zeppelin defined more of what rock is about. The Beatles had amazing songwriting, but lacked the instrumental talent that Zeppelin had. I personally find the early Beatles to be disgusing simple bubblegum pop, They did however become innovative masters from Rubber Soul to Abbey Road, where they were amazing. Zeppelin had better drum and guitar work and a lead singer in Plant, who can be annoying at times, but does have a more varied vocal range than Lennon. Beatles were more influential overall, but Zeppelin were definately more influential on the instrumental sound of rock.

Led Zeppelin were a great band but if they had to compete with the Beatles as a singles act they would have lost like everyone else did. They were a great hard rock band with some great acoustic based songs but if it was not for the Beatles not releasing singles on albums like Sgt Peppers and the White Album and help making FM rock music popular I don't know if acts like Zeppelin would have made it. Don't forget the Beatles led the the British Invasion that paved the way for the Yardbirds which eventually became Led Zeppelin.

Led Zeppelin's fan base is as enormous and varied as their music. They have retained a huge percentage of three generations of rock fans. Definitely one of my favorite bands. The chemistry between the four of these guys was absolutely amazing, and their music turned the rock and roll community upside-down. All four of them were musical mavericks: Jimmy Page with his distorted guitars and proto-metal riffs, Robert Plant with his soaring vocals, John Bonham with his thundering, yet controled, drumming, and John Paul Jones wielding both the bass and the keyboards...there certainly hasn't been anything else quite like Led Zeppelin. All we get today are groups of three or four punk dumbsh*ts that think they can "sing" and "play" good music just because they can hold instruments in their hands...how far have we fallen?

My favourite band of all time are the beatles they are amazing i have all there albums and my favourite are abbey road and revolver. I like some of Led Zeppelin's songs, but they creep the hell out of me with that witchcraft, satanism, occultism, etc, they didn't even knew if they wrote their own songs!!! That Crowley stuff is very frightening, considering that he influenced Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath, and most bands that came afterwards. Not to mention LaVoy's influence with The Eagles, very worrying. I like listening to led zeppelin, but I don't like listening them too much. I went to www.answers.com for myself and the Beatles have easily influenced more bands than anyone else in rock history and what polls are you talking about when it comes to Led Zeppelin being the greatest the rock act. The Rolling Stone poll was done by musicians and record producers and as I remember VH1 did a similiar poll and the Beatles came out on top also. Led Zeppelin had the better players but that does not equate to them being more influential than the Beatles or even The Rolling Stones.

I have to disagree Led Zeppelin were a great band but the Beatles were the first rock band to have a number one album and when it comes to record sales the Beatles are second to none those are the plain facts. Led Zeppelin only had a major impact when it came to hard rock but the Beatles put British Rock on the map worldwide and they were the band who made the rock band bigger than the solo act. The Beatles paved the way for bands like Led Zeppelin when they refused to release singles on many of their albums when the music scene was basically a singles market, the Beatles also set up the foundation for arena rock with the Shea Stadium concert. The Beatles have influenced acts ranging from Led Zeppelin to folk artists to country artists and my favourite band Pink Floyd was majorily influenced by the Beatles who the hell do you think is responsible for the classic rock era of the 60's the Beatles with all due respect to Led Zeppelin who were a great act.

Led Zeppelin are a bit overrated they are very sloppy especially Jimi Page. Robert Plant voice is actually ok but not great. They have been known by many musicians as stealing from the blues and sounding forced doing it. I would not say they are the most influential rock band that goes to the Beatles and I'm a Black Sabbath fan. Black Sabbath are the ones who started heavy metal. Led Zeppelin is great but know how matter great Led Zeppelin is they are not as influential as The Beatles or as a popular. The Beatles are responsible for the British Invasion which produced The Yardbirds which turned into Led Zeppelin. Look John Lennon on his own is in Rock Hall of Fame as a Beatle as a solo act and is in the vocal group hall of fame and in the songwritng hall of fame. Led Zeppelin had the better drummer, and guitarist, but the Beatles had way better vocal harmonies, better keyboardist, maybe the better bassist, and as a lead singer the Beatles had two very good lead singers Led Zeppelin only one great one, also George Harrison played the sitar and was a great slide player. The Beatles had the better songwriters in terms of making hits and their chord progressions are legendary in rock music history, plus Paul McCartney recorded records playing all the instruments on his own. The Beatles had the versatility but Led Zeppelin had the better specialists.

I've had the privilege of seeing virtually all the great bands of the rock era, ie the Beatles, Stones, Who, Floyd, Hendrix, Guns, and many more. I genuinely love all the great bands I just listed, however, I was spoiled for life when it comes to rock music, by witnessing Led Zeppelin in 1972. I don't care what anyone says, because I know from experience, there has never been a band even remotely close to Led Zeppelin. Led Zeppelin, fully focused and firing on all cylinders were unbeatable, not even the magnificent Who, at their peak, could compete with them. In terms of influence, popularity, and commercial success, the only band in the same building with Zeppelin are the Beatles. What sets Zeppelin apart from the Beatles however, was their live prowess and unique magical chemistry that sadly, died with John Bonham.

Led Zeppelin is a great band but they are not even in the same field with The Beatles in terms of influencing musicians the Beatles are easily more cited by musicians than them. They have easily had more of an impact on the charts and the industry as a whole than Led Zeppelin. The Beatles are the ones who made the album the medium choice and if was not for that Zepp might have been forced to be a singles band which Jimi Page has acknowledged. The Beatles have easily introduced more innovations than them some of which actually Led Zeppelin had used namely, vocals and guitar through leslie speaker, the corridor effect,guitar on the recording console,the use of tabla all done by the Beatles first and you forget all the subgenres they had huge part of popularizing and devloping. Led Zeppelin were better technical musicians I will give you that but they were not as innovative or as influential.
